On July 28, 2008, a huge fire has completely destroyed the partly wooden pier in the North Somerset seaside resort.

The blaze ripped through the partly-wooden structure, which was opened in 1904, and sent vast plumes of grey smoke spiralling into the air above the resort in Somerset. Avon Fire and Rescue said six fire engines and 30 firefighters were at the scene. The blaze is believed to have started in the west tower of the Grade II listed pier, which is privately owned.

Firefighters said started in an area containing deep fat fryers. The quarter-of-a-mile-long pier, which attracts thousands of visitors a year, reopened in April after a massive revamp.
